COMMUNITY SERVICE
The mission of the Community Service Committee is to provide meaningful opportunities for ASCE members to engage with service events, local non profits, and volunteer organizations. Through our outreach efforts, we aim to make a positive impact in our community while helping our members develop a deeper connection to the people and causes around them. The committee creates welcoming spaces for members to give back, meet others with shared values, and experience the fulfillment that comes from serving others.
Our past events include building homes, participating in beach and wetland cleanups, organizing food and toy drives, and assisting with meal services. We have supported the Ronald McDonald House, OC Second Harvest Food Bank, Illumination Foundation, and SONRIE, among many others. Recently, the committee has expanded its efforts to include a Charity Pickleball Tournament that raised funds for local organizations, as well as a School Supplies Drive that helps students begin the academic year with the tools they need to succeed. Each event reflects our commitment to improving the lives of those in our region and strengthening the bond between ASCE members and the community we serve.
ANNUAL EVENTS
CARDS FOR HOSPITALIZED KIDS
The Community Service Committee creates handmade cards for Cards for Hospitalized Kids every February, including uplifting Valentine’s Day messages and STEM‑themed greeting cards during Engineers Week. These cards are shared with children in hospitals across the country to bring encouragement, joy, and a reminder that they are supported by our engineering community. This annual tradition helps brighten a child's day while promoting compassion and creativity among our members.
CHARITY PICKLEBALL TOURNAMENT
Established in 2024, our Annual Charity Pickleball Tournament bring together pickleball enthusiasts of all skill levels for a day of fun and competition. Teams and spectators enjoy friendly matches while raising funds for their chosen charities, highlighting the event's spirit of camaraderie and community support
CLOTHES THE DEAL: PROFESSIONAL CLOTHING DRIVE
Every Spring during our Annual Awards Night, we host a professional clothing drive in partnership with Clothes The Deal, a non-profit organization that provides free professional clothing and other services to low-income men, women, at-risk youth, and U.S. Veterans.
COASTAL CLEAN-UP
Coastal Cleanup Day is California's largest annual volunteer event. It is an opportunity for people across the state to clean our creeks, rivers, lakes, coast, and shorelines of all kinds to help restore our environment. Virtually every body of water in California ultimately flows to the ocean, and that water can carry a lot of trash. ASCE OC YMF and our volunteers participated by picking up trash at Huntington City Beach.
FRIENDSHIP BRACELET MAKING
In support of the HALO Foundation, we created handmade friendship bracelets that are delivered to children and teens in need of encouragement and emotional support. These bracelets serve as small but meaningful reminders that they are cared for and not alone. Through this activity, members bring hope and kindness to young people while engaging in a simple, creative act of service.
HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE
Every holiday season, ASCE OC partners with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) to support their program SONRIE (Support of Orphanages in Need through Resources, Innovation, and Empowerment) to collect and deliver toys to Ojos Negros, Mexico. SONRIE works with orphanages and communities in need in Mexico to help improve living conditions and engage kids in STEM activities.
MAKING PB&J SANDWICHES FOR THE HOMELESS
During the Thanksgiving season, in the spirit of the holiday, we gather as a community to prepare and deliver peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for those in need at the Long Beach Rescue Mission. This tradition is a heartfelt way to share gratitude and provide nourishment to our community.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE
In partnership with the Assistance League, we help provide local students with essential school supplies for the new school year. Through member donations, we help equip children across Los Angeles and Orange County with backpacks, notebooks, and other classroom essentials that support their learning and confidence. This drive helps reduce financial barriers for families and strengthens educational opportunities within our community.
VINEYARD ANAHEIM: FOOD PANTRY
The Community Service Committee partners with Vineyard Anaheim to provide over 450 families with fresh groceries and produce at the Brookhurst Community Center, in Anaheim, CA. Since the program’s inception at the beginning of the pandemic, Vineyard Anaheim’s Compassion program has been able to feed over 2.5 million families fresh produce and groceries every week.
