UNIVERSITY OUTREACH

The University Outreach Committee is a strong supporter of the growth, development, and achievements of our local universities. By actively connecting with Cal State University Fullerton (CSUF)Cal State University Long Beach (CSULB), and the University of California Irvine (UCI), the committee helps bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world engineering practice. Through consistent collaboration, we provide students with insight into the civil engineering profession and help them begin building meaningful relationships with industry professionals.

Our involvement includes supporting, promoting, and attending student chapter events, as well as organizing resume workshops, job fairs, and technical tours at engineering firms and local infrastructure facilities. We also coordinate educational presentations on a variety of topics that expose students to the breadth and depth of the civil engineering field. In addition, the committee plays a vital role in assisting with preparation for the Pacific Southwest Regional Conference by offering project guidance, compliance support, and mentorship. Through these efforts, the University Outreach Committee empowers students to develop professionally, expand their networks, and gain the confidence needed to transition into the engineering workforce.

ANNUAL EVENTS

HISTORY AND HERITAGE/STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP NIGHT

Every year, ASCE OC Branch and YMF hosts History and Heritage/Student Scholarship Night to recognize outstanding student members from UCI, CSULB, and CSUF by rewarding over $20,000 worth of scholarships. The event celebrates the past, present, and future of civil engineering with the installation of new ASCE OC Board Members, Student Chapter Presidents' presentations, and more! The ASCE OC Most Outstanding Student Chapter of the Year based on annual reports are also rewarded during this event.

MENTORSHIP ACADEMY REVEAL SOCIAL & END GAMES

Starting at the beginning of the school year the three OC Universities are given the opportunity to become a part of our Annual University Outreach Mentorship Program! The mentorship groups consist of an OC YMF member and one or two students. The program encourages the interaction between professionals and students by requiring mentors to check in with their “mentees” once a week (via text, email, etc.) and in-person 3 times. To encourage the mentorship pairs to go above and beyond the requirements, a
point system is incorporated. This point system gives a larger weight to group collaboratio
n and technical tours/workshops. At the end of the program the top 3 pairs are rewarded. The program begins with a mentorship reveal social and ends with the Final Mentorship Games. Through this program, the students are able to expand their network with other students and professionals.

MEET THE BOARD MEETINGS

The purpose of the "Meet the Board" meetings is to introduce the new student chapter Office boards to the University Outreach Committee, YMF Executive Board, and Branch Executive Board. The meeting eases the board transition so they know who to reach out to for assistance. The committee discusses their goals for the year, event calendar, and noted any requests the student chapters had for the committee. University Outreach team also cover the past events hosted by the committee, asked how these events can be improved, and offered new ideas for future events. Lastly, the UO Committee teaches the student chapters how they can request for funding from YMF and Branch to support their activities and technical projects.

RESUME & MOCK INTERVIEW WORKSHOP

The University Outreach Committee hosts a Resume and Mock Interview Workshop every year to allow the students to learn and put into practice the tips and tricks they gain from local professionals to ace their search for an internship or an entry-level position.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST SYMPOSIUM

To support the local universities' projects and teams during the Annual Pacific Southwest Symposium, the University Outreach Committee stops by on the event's Canoe Day to support students by bringing snacks and water! The Committee also assists in the teams' project funding prior to the 3-Day Event.

ALUMNI SOCIAL

As the graduation season approaches, the University Outreach Committee hosts an Alumni Social to encourage graduating seniors to join YMF post-graduation. The event is a fun social with food, games, and networking opportunities.
