PROGRAM TOPICS

MASTERING COMMUNICATION

Effective communication is an important skill for all leaders in the engineering industry. It can increase performance and productivity, empower colleagues, build connections, better convey ideas across diverse teams and foster a positive work environment.

NETWORKING & RELATIONSHIP BUILDING

Networking and relationship building cultivates a network of supportive individuals that can provide young engineers insights, advice, and mentorship throughout their professional journey. These relationships can lead to collaborations and personal growth opportunities to propel them forward.

NEGOTIATION SKILLS FOR ENGINEERING PROFESSIONALS

Negotiation is an important leadership skill to better understand the interests of those you're leading and to find ways of satisfying those interests to achieve organizational goals.

TIME, STRESS, AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Time, stress, and energy management is an important leadership skill to make the most of day-to-day work. It allows people to bring their best selves to whatever they engage in, including deadlines.

RESUME BUILDING FOR YOUNG ENGINEERS

A resume is a document created and used by young engineers to present their background, skills, and accomplishments. As they continue on to their careers, things to update and include in the resume transforms. It is important to recognize what items to prioritize depending on its purpose - moving jobs, featuring project experience to clients, or applying for an award.

PERSONAL BRANDING

Creating a personal brand helps leaders build trust and credibility with their target audience. By sharing expertise, knowledge, and experience, leaders can position themselves as a reliable and credible source of information, which could lead to more opportunities.

PROBLEM SOLVING & CRITICAL THINKING

Critical thinking enables engineers to analyze and evaluate the various components of a problem, identify the most important factors, and develop effective solutions. It plays a crucial role in decision-making when challenged with a new task or role.

LEADERSHIP ESSENTIALS FOR YOUNG ENGINEERS

Engineering is a profession that requires a combination of technical skills and leadership skills. Effective leaders in the industry possess essential skills that make them better future managers and/or ASCE leaders.

ADAPT TO CHANGE: RESILIENCY & FLEXIBILITY

Being resilient and flexible is an important engineering skill when a shift occurs in the workplace, industry, and even personally. How a leader responds, monitors, learns, and anticipate these changes, whether challenging or not, is a reflection of their ability to adapt and apply solutions in a timely and successful manner.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR PEERS & BUILDING STRONGER RELATIONS

Peer relationships can help young engineers to develop new skills and knowledge. When co-workers trust and respect each other, they are more likely to be open to sharing information and offer help when needed.
