The Air We Choose to Breathe
The image of a gas mask dominates my artwork, symbolizing a future where clean air is no longer a given, but something we must fight to preserve. It represents both protection and consequence; a barrier between humanity and the damage it has created. Through the lenses of the mask, two different yet connected realities unfold: one of industrial pollution and another of environmental destruction through fire. Together, they reflect the dual impact of human activity on the planet.
On one side of the mask, factories release thick smoke into the air, illustrating how industrialization has contributed to climate change and air pollution. On the other side, forests burn, representing deforestation, wildfires, and the loss of natural ecosystems. These scenes are not distant possibilities; they are already happening. By placing them within the mask, I wanted to show that these issues are no longer separate from us; they are something we are forced to confront directly.
Beneath the mask lies polluted water, filled with debris and waste. A seal rests in this environment, its expression quiet but heavy with meaning. It represents the countless animals affected by human negligence. Unlike humans, animals cannot change their behaviors or advocate for themselves, yet they suffer the consequences of pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change. The seal serves as a reminder that the environmental crisis is not just about us, but instead it is about every living thing that shares this planet.
The contrast between color and grayscale throughout the piece is intentional. The dull, lifeless tones surrounding the scene emphasize destruction, while the limited use of color draws attention to the most critical elements: fire, polluted water, and the fragile life that remains. This contrast highlights the imbalance we have created, where destruction is widespread, and life struggles to stand out.
The gas mask itself is a warning. It suggests a future where survival depends on artificial protection rather than a healthy environment. It asks a question: if we continue on this path, will we reach a point where breathing clean air becomes a privilege instead of a right? This is not a distant or exaggerated future, but a realistic outcome if current patterns continue.
However, this artwork is not meant to leave the viewer in despair. Instead, it is meant to inspire reflection and action. The problems shown are caused by human choices, which means they can also be solved by them. Engineers, scientists, and communities around the world are already working toward solutions such as renewable energy, sustainable design, and conservation efforts. These efforts demonstrate that change is possible—but only if people are willing to take responsibility.
The message of this piece is ultimately about choice. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to the larger picture. Whether it is reducing waste, supporting sustainable practices, or raising awareness, individuals have the power to influence the future. The world we live in tomorrow will be shaped by the decisions we make today.
In the end, the gas mask represents more than survival. Rather, it serves as a decision point. We can continue down a path where we are forced to protect ourselves from the world we have damaged, or we can choose to protect the world itself. The future is not something that simply happens to us; it is something we create. The question is, what kind of world are we choosing to live in?
