When thinking about power, our minds go to electricity or physical force, but in the context of Earth’s survival, power means more. It represents the collective work of the individuals on Earth, the innovations of engineers, and the resilience of the natural world. In my artwork, “Our Neighborhood, Our Earth, Our Future,” I wanted to think about a world where this power is used responsibly. As a 10th grader looking towards the future, I think about what Earth will look like when I’m an adult. I want to visualize a future filled with clean cities, green areas, and lively neighborhoods where we can celebrate Earth Day every single day.
In the back of my drawing, there are tall buildings, wind turbines, and solar power. These represent the power of engineering. Engineers are the ones who create and change how our cities work. Instead of extracting fossil fuels from the Earth and releasing harmful oil and gases, renewable sources of energy must be used. For example, Earth’s natural forces, such as sunlight and wind, generate electricity on their own, without the release of pollution, such as Carbon Dioxide. This is a crucial part of the theme about “Our Power, Our Planet” because when we use smart technology to generate energy, we are using our minds to protect the Earth. With people and engineers contributing to a sustainable future together, we can create a grid that provides clean electricity to every home without hurting the atmosphere.
Technology is useful; however, it is not enough on its own. That is the reason I put Earth in the center of a neighborhood. Sometimes we think about the environment as something far off, like the forests or the oceans, but the environment is also where we go to school, where we live, and where we play. This is why our planet matters. Towards the front of my drawing, I depicted people working together, picking up trash, and cleaning up. This shows the power of working together. Even small things, like picking up litter or recycling, make a huge difference when everyone does them together. This is because we all have the power to be leaders in our own communities and inspire action to protect the environment.
I also wanted to show people on bicycles and lots of green grass. In a better future, we won't need to drive cars everywhere. If engineers build more bike paths and parks, our air will be cleaner,r and people will be healthier. My drawing shows a neighborhood that is built for people to walk and enjoy the outdoors. This makes the community stronger and keeps the planet cooler. This part of my art is about exploring how human choices shape our world, showing that choosing a bike over a car is a powerful way to reduce our carbon footprint.
The theme "Our Power, Our Planet" is a reminder that we shouldn't wait for someone else to fix the world. Every person has a role. An engineer might design a better solar panel, but a student can start a recycling club or choose to bike to school. My artwork is an example of what happens when we all do our part. It is a bright, colorful world because a sustainable world is a happy one. When we use our power, we protect the resources that allow our society to thrive. I feel hopeful about the future. We already have the tools and the ideas to make my artwork come true in real life. If we use our power to make good choices and build better cities, we can keep the Earth healthy for a long time. “The Looking Towards A Better Future,e" I wrote at the bottom of my page, is a goal that I think we can reach if we start working on it right now. Our planet is our only home, and it is up to us to use our power to preserve it for the next generation.
