Topic: OC EWRI Technical Tour - Big Canyon Water Quality and Restoration Project 

Speaker:  Alys Arenas, Restoration Manager, Newport Bay Conservancy (NBC) 

As NBC’s restoration manager, Alys is the lead on bay-wide monitoring and control of non-native invasive species such as desert knapweed and Algerian sea lavender, monitoring and maintenance of restored areas in Big Canyon as well as other canyons tributary to Newport Bay, and bay-wide rare plant monitoring and native plant propagation. Alys plays a key role in NBC’s education and community outreach programs. Alys received her Master of Science in Geographic Information Science from California State University, Long Beach in 2014. Bob Stein, Assistant City Engineer, City of Newport Beach Bob is a civil design engineer and manager for the City’s watershed protection and restoration program. The program grapples with emerging environmental issues involving groundwater exfiltration, canyon destabilization, pollutant source tracking, mitigating non-point source pollution, and meaningful integrated restoration planning. He completed the civil engineering doctoral program at UCI in 2014 and he a registered civil engineer. Tour:  The site walk begins at Back Bay Drive and will take us to a lookout point to view the 17-acre restoration area, and then hike to a second lookout point to view the site for the upcoming 17-acre restoration adjacent to Back Bay Drive that will include a tidally influence embayment.  

Time: Lunch @ 11:30 am; Program ends @ 1:30 pm 

Location: Back Bay Drive Parking Lot. Take Jamboree Road south to San Joaquin Hills Road and make right on the Mountain to The Sea Trail & Bikeway to the parking lot, Newport Bay Marine Protected Area.
