About the event

Join the ASCE OC Sustainability Committee for a morning of habitat restoration and exploration at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, in Huntington Beach.

The Bolsa Chica wetlands restoration was one of the largest wetland restoration projects to be constructed in southern California. Approximately 370 acres were re-introduced to full tidal influence. The project also improved muted tidal circulation to 200 acres, retained 120 acres of seasonal pond habitat, and reserved 252 acres for future full tidal restoration when oil field operations terminate in 15-20 years. Most of the affected area has been isolated from the ocean since 1900 and was used for oil production for the past 65 years.

Activities:

  • 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM: Help us in the restoration efforts by removing invasive non-native plants from current and future restoration areas. Expect to get your hands a little dirty as we work towards restoring the natural habitat.
  • 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Enjoy a guided hike through the park, led by the Bolsa Chica Land Trust. Learn about the significance of Bolsa Chica in flood control, water quality, and biodiversity conservation.

What to Bring:

  • Close-toed shoes are required, and long pants are recommended.
  • Sunscreen, hats, and layers of clothing are recommended as there is no shade on the mesa.
  • Bring a refillable water bottle.
  • Consider bringing your own gloves, although tools and extra gloves will be provided.

Who Can Participate:

  • Volunteers aged 5 and up are welcome. Children under 14 must be accompanied by a chaperone (parent or designated adult).
  • Note: The event involves physical activity, including walking, pulling weeds, hand watering plants, and turning over soil. Please assess the suitability of the activities for smaller children.

Location & Parking:

  • Meet at the Reserve parking lot located at the corner of Warner Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway (3842 Warner Ave, Huntington Beach).
  • Public  transportation options are available, and if not, carpooling is highly encouraged.
  • Parking is free in the designated lot. If full, there is paid parking across Warner Avenue or free parking across the PCH (behind Jack In The Box).

Don't miss this opportunity to contribute to the restoration of Bolsa Chica's native habitat while enjoying a morning of outdoor adventure and learning! We look forward to seeing you there.
