WORK & PROFESSIONAL LIFE

Describe your responsibilities and some significant projects.
My responsibilities at work include vertical and horizontal geometric design, sign & striping, and report/plans for roadway, highway, bike paths, and ADA compliant infrastructure. In addition, storm drain design, storm water mitigation, and storm water treatment for various countries & cities following appropriate guidelines. Furthermore, utility coordination and providing guidance to younger staff. Some significant project I have worked on included: City of Glendle- San Fernando Road Beautification, City of Ontario- ATP Cycle 5- Vine Ave & B ST Bike Blvd Project, and the Caltrans Middle Mile Broadband Network initiative

What project are you currently working on and what have you accomplished/what are your tasks?
Garden River Bridge, City of Glendale. The City of Glendale is planning to construct a pedestrian bridge over the Los Angeles River, connecting Glendale to the City of Los Angeles. My primary focus on this project is the storm drain design. This includes ensuring that the roadway and surrounding properties at the bridge tie-in points do not experience flooding during rain, and that stormwater runoff from the project area is properly treated to remove pollutants before being discharged into the Los Angeles River.

What is your favorite part about being a Civil Engineer?
My favorite part of being a civil engineer is the ability to make an impact in the communities around me. As a civil engineer I get to work on projects that improve the daily lives of the public- creating safer, more efficient, and sustainable environments for both the current and future generations to come.

What skills do you find most valuable to focus on in your career?
The skill I found most valuable to focus on in my career is networking/communication. Learn to build a good network and a support system you can rely on when you need help/guidance. Furthermore, focus on learning how to communicate your thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively.

What drew you to your specific career path? If you could start your career differently, what would you do differently?
I was drawn to my specific career path by the impact I could have on the world around me through the types of projects I would work on.

ASCE & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

How/Why did you get involved? Why did you choose to stay involved?
I became involved with ASCE during my freshman year of college through the Timber Strong Design-Build Competition. Participating in this competition encouraged me to attend additional ASCE events hosted by both the Orange County Younger Member Forum (OCYMF) and the CSULB student chapter. Through these events, I formed friendships and connected with mentors who have guided me throughout my journey as a young civil engineer. I have chosen to stay involved in ASCE because it offers valuable opportunities to grow my professional network and stay connected with individuals across the industry.

How has ASCE impacted your work and/or what is your favorite benefit of your involvement?
ASCE has had a significant impact on my career by connecting me with my current employer, whom I met in 2021 at an ASCE OCYMF Pathways Academy event. In addition, the technical tours and workshops hosted by ASCE has allowed me to learn about innovative solutions being applied in the industry, which I can reference and apply to my own projects. My favorite benefit of being involved with ASCE is the amount of networking opportunities ASCE has to offer.

Who is someone you Admire and Why?
Someone who is a role model to me is my dad. He has shown me the value of hard work and perseverance. In addition, he has always provided me with guidance and believed in me when I needed it most.

If you have one piece of advice to give to young professionals what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to yes to new opportunities and to get out of your comfort zone.

Lastly, what would be your personal motto?
Stay strong, stay positive, and never give up.
