ASCE OC Geo-Institute: Annual Half-Day Seminar

On August 24, 2023, ASCE OC Geo-Institute proudly presented our annual half-day seminar on "An Update on Liquefaction Evaluation and Mitigation Methods." The event took place at the Market Place Center from 8 am - 12 pm with nearly 80 attendees. All proceeds from this event will support our local student chapters as scholarships and funding.

Three distinguished professionals shared their insights and experiences in evaluating and mitigating liquefaction and lateral spreading.

Dr. Robert Kayen, Ph.D., PE, Adjunct Professor of the University of California, Berkeley, opened our event with an insightful presentation on the results of a decades-long international project compiling field shear wave velocity (Vs) data. Dr. Kayen also discussed the development of probabilistic correlations for seismic soil liquefaction triggering with Vs data.

Following Dr. Kayen's presentation, Dr. James Gingery, Ph.D., PE, GE, Chief Engineer of Keller North America, discussed selecting appropriate ground improvement methods for liquefaction mitigation. Dr. Gingery shared his expertise, drawing from his twenty-five years of experience providing ground improvement and geo-structural engineering for design-build projects across the Western U.S. and beyond.

Lastly, Mr. Matteo Montesi, PE, GE, PMP, Vice President, and Senior Technical Principal of WSP, closed our event with a case study of the liquefaction mitigation project at Port of San Diego's B Street Pier Facility. Mr. Montesi's presentation exemplified how the technical data and correlations from Dr. Kayen and Dr. Gingery's presentations apply to real-world practice.

Attendees were actively engaged the whole event and shared many insightful thoughts and questions during the closing presenter's panel. At the start of the event and during the mid-day break, attendees also had the opportunity to socialize, network, and check out our sponsor booths.

A huge thank you to our sponsors for supporting our event!
